The Estate
Château Calon Ségur is one of the most iconic estates of Saint-Estèphe, with roots dating back to the 12th century. Its name comes from Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, known as the “Prince of Vines,” who also owned Lafite and Latour, but famously declared: “I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon.” This phrase lives on today through the red heart that adorns the wine’s label. Classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 classification, Calon Ségur has always remained true to its identity as a noble, powerful, and long-lived wine.
The estate spans about 55 hectares of vines in a single block—something quite rare in the Médoc. The terroir consists of well-drained gravelly ridges mixed with deep clay, typical of Saint-Estèphe. This diversity of soils allows Calon Ségur to produce wines that are both structured and dense, yet fresh, with a strong expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, the estate’s dominant grape variety.
Since its acquisition by Suravenir Assurances in 2012, significant investments have been made to modernize the facilities while preserving the soul of the estate. Parcel-by-parcel work has been refined, viticulture is now organically certified, and the winemaking is carried out with exceptional precision. In addition to the grand vin, the estate also produces Marquis de Calon Ségur, a more accessible second wine, and a rare white cuvée. Calon Ségur today represents a perfect harmony of Médoc tradition, rigor, and contemporary finesse.
The Wine
The wine of Calon Ségur is crafted through meticulous and demanding viticulture, now certified organic, with careful attention paid to each individual parcel to best express the complexity of the Saint-Estèphe terroir. Harvesting is done by hand, followed by rigorous sorting of the grapes before vinification. This takes place in a state-of-the-art winery using temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats, allowing for precise, plot-by-plot vinification. The wine is then aged for an average of 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels, about 50% of which are new, striking a perfect balance between tannic structure, freshness, and the elegance of the fruit.
Tasting
Calon Ségur reveals a deep nose of blackcurrant, blackberry, graphite, and subtle floral notes. On the palate, the wine is structured and dense, with firm yet perfectly integrated tannins, supported by a lovely freshness. The finish is long, precise, and elegant, marked by a noble minerality and excellent aging potential.
